Drawn from architectural and textile sources, this sheet is a rich visual tapestry of floral forms, stylized vines, and geometric flourishes in a dazzling spectrum of colors. Central to the composition is a large square featuring a symmetrical rosette pattern in warm orange, pink, and green tones, echoing Mughal influences seen in inlaid stonework and palace decorations. Surrounding it are an array of rectangular panels showcasing different regional motifs: scrolling foliage, blooming lotuses, and jasmine clusters rendered in reds, blues, golds, and blacks. Several of the borders are reminiscent of traditional sari textiles, painted manuscripts, and marble inlay work (pietra dura) from sites like the Taj Mahal. The upper portion of the print features elongated bands of intertwined vines, peacocks, and mythical floral motifs that would have adorned friezes or been embroidered onto ceremonial garments. At the sides and bottom, repetitive stylized flowers and medallion patterns reflect the ornate language of temple architecture and fine Indian handicrafts. Printed in Paris by Firmin-Didot around 1869 and lithographed by Duron, this plate formed part of Albert Racinet’s groundbreaking work cataloging world ornamentation. It not only inspired European designers of the Victorian era but also contributed to the broader Orientalist movement that shaped decorative arts in the West. This exquisite print is ideal for collectors, designers, or anyone inspired by the complexity and beauty of Indian decorative traditions. Condition: Excellent condition. Crisp and vivid colors with no significant defects. Slight age-toning to margins. No tears, folds, or repairs.
