The robust and vital figure of the child contrasts with the more pensive and reflective figure of the one who holds him in his arms. Joseph's expression is full of sentimentality, captured at the moment when the profound awareness of his vocation and mission on earth dawns on him. The stylistic and pictorial analysis of the work leads us, first of all, to find an efficient plastic vigor of the figures also due to a marked accentuation of the chiaroscuro values. These characteristics can be found in a certain phase of the art of the Venetian master Giovan Battista Piazzetta (Venice 1683-1754). These artistic values were learned by Piazzetta in contact with the Emilian painting of his early apprenticeship away from Venice. It is in fact in the Bolognese years that he could confront the works of Giuseppe Maria Crespi and with the luministic vigor of the works executed in the first half of the seventeenth century by Guercino. These data, together with some chromatic connotations of the surfaces facing the light, as well as the redness that characterizes the anatomies, especially of the child, are inherent in the production of the painter G.B. Piazzetta, since the times of his first Venetian formation. Another interesting technical aspect is the quick and sure drafting of the brushstrokes, which are well associated with the period of transition between Baroque and Rococo in force in the second decade of the eighteenth century, the period to which this canvas should belong, or the youthful phase of Piazzetta. It could be an Emilian or Venetian painter in contact with these artistic dynamics. The painting is mounted on a splendid and important contemporary frame, an inverted "Salvador Rosa" frame, decorated in faux marble lacquer and ochre lacquer, which has a thickness of approximately 17 cm. The dimensions of the canvas are 74cm wide x 96cm high; the external dimensions of the frame are 108cm x 125cm. We attach to the sale a historical certificate of authenticity according to law.
