Artwork sold with frame (101 x 140 cm) Jakob Wagner (1861–1915) was a Swiss painter known for his serene landscapes, tranquil waterscapes, and evocative scenes of European nature. Born on January 2, 1861, in Gelterkinden, Switzerland, he received artistic training in Paris and Munich, studying under respected artists Karl Raupp and Ludwig Herterich. Between 1885 and 1888, Wagner lived in Italy, absorbing its rich artistic environment, which left a lasting impression on his work. Later, from 1891 to 1894, he lived and worked in Locarno, Switzerland, where he established a studio with his wife, the portrait painter Clara Wagner-Grosch. Wagner’s works capture the harmony and light of natural landscapes, reflecting a careful study of environment and atmosphere. His subjects often included mountain valleys, coastal scenes, and village harbors. Notable paintings include Fishermen near Palermo, St. Alban Church Graveyard, Basel, and Tessiner Tal im Abendlicht. His works are praised for their peaceful tone and compositional balance. Wagner’s paintings have appeared in auctions and continue to attract collectors of Swiss art. His legacy is preserved through both private collections and exhibitions, including a posthumous show with his wife’s works in Ascona. Wagner passed away on September 22, 1915, in Weisslingen, leaving behind a body of work that celebrates the quiet beauty of nature. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
