An exquisite set of 6 rosewood dining chairs by Niels Møller, in his timeless model 78 design of 1962.
Purchased together in April 1972 at the Scandia Interiors store in San Diego, these iconic Møller dining chairs will grace any dining room with their beauty and simplicity, displaying an ergonomic design that combines elegance with comfort. Their gently curved frames sculpted in solid Brazilian rosewood remain in fine condition. Their seats have been restored with authentic cord imported from Denmark, hand-woven in the original pattern.
Over the course of his career, Niels Otto Møller earned an unparalleled reputation for excellence in quality and craftsmanship. He was best known for his sculptural chair designs and for using the finest materials. The model 78 chair is his most famous. It shows best in the rich, deep brown color of rosewood, offset perfectly by the light tone of natural Danish cord.
Due to its scarcity since the 1960’s, Brazilian rosewood is hardly ever used in modern furniture, making chairs such as these collectors’ items. Two companion pieces in Brazilian rosewood are also available from this seller: A gateleg dining table and a large sideboard, purchased at the same time in 1972 as a dining room set. These can each be found in separate listings.
NIELS KOEFOED ROSEWOOD DINING TABLE. A remarkable oval gateleg table with a luxurious rosewood drop-leaf tabletop and solid rosewood legs. It provides seating for up to six people, making a perfect pairing with the Niels Møller chairs. It is shown with the six chairs in two of the accompanying photos.
JOHANNES ANDERSEN ROSEWOOD SIDEBOARD. This stunning 94.5” sideboard blends beautifully with the dining table and chairs. Handcrafted in exquisite book-matched Brazilian rosewood with rounded corners, its back Is also finished in rosewood, providing an option in an open floor plan of serving as a distinctive separator between a dining space and a living space.
Together, these 3 items comprise an elegant example of the best of mid-Century Danish craftsmanship, renowned for combining simple, functional lines with sleek, modern design. They offer a rare opportunity to furnish a dining room or dining area with top-quality rosewood furniture.
