Hand-knotted in wool and originating from Russia circa 1880-1890, this 4x5 antique rug of Kuba provenance is the latest addition to our Antique collections.
On the Design
Admirers of the craft may appreciate this very special antique rug for being not only an exceptional find from one of the most special provenances, but a rarity to find a Russian Kuba rug of such versatile size, scale, and love in its every inch. It features an all-over repeating pattern of stylized, geometric patterns atop a rich beige field. These patterns are intricately decorated with traditional symbols in beige, brown, red, blue, and cream tones. Connoisseurs will appreciate what an uncommon play of styles this is, with a playful sense of symmetry and scale, too, making it very modern for its age. The field design portrays a series of perfectly mirrored Canavar Ayagi, or monster’s feet, used to represent the dragon and power in antiquity; depicted in tribal red, blue, and brown colourways against a beige background.
Contained within several complementary borders (including the innermost border with seldom-seen variations of the Goz protective eye symbol), it is uncommon to see the Canavar Ayagi as the primary motif in any era without accenting another symbol, further contributing to the rarity of this piece in a collection. The illusion of soothing repetition leads the eye to admire the equally distinct variety of geometric patterns in the field and border alike. This is a bold, graphic, personal antique piece; a piece of weaving history most likely from a special workshop with a deep reverence for the charm of geometric rugs—this being one of the most elegant and versatile we’ve seen.
