This is a prime example of Khatam Kari, an ancient Persian art form of marquetry or inlaying. It features delicate and intricate geometric patterns created by meticulously inlaying small pieces of wood (like ebony, teak ziziphus), bone (often came bone), and metal. Often used as decorative pieces, these boxes are also functional and commonly serve as jewelry boxes, keepsake boxes, or specialized chocolate or candy dishes.
Khatam Kari is deeply rooted in Persian culture and dates back centuries, with its peak popularity during the Safavid dynasty.
The box is unusual in its scalloped shape. The inside is lined with a velvet-like fabric.
