This vintage 1960 print by Hopi artist Bruce Timeche depicts The Hummingbird Kachina (Do tsa Kachina), part of the Arizona Bank Kachina Collection. Known for his colorful and detailed representations of traditional Hopi ceremonial figures, Timeche captures the vibrancy and symbolic meaning of the Kachinas in this mid-century work.
In Hopi tradition, the Hummingbird Kachina is one of the many bird Kachinas. While the dress and design are similar among them, colors may vary according to the impersonator’s preference. In certain ceremonies, the hummingbird is “lured” into the village plaza by dancers bearing flowers — a representation of beauty, joy, and the connection between people and nature.
The reverse side of the print includes printed text describing the cultural significance of the Hummingbird Kachina.
