19th century antique Chinese red lacquered ming style wedding cabinet.
This 19th century red lacquer cabinet is called a “Wedding Cabinet. ” In ancient China, these were made as dowries by families of brides, with their sizes and embellishments an indication of the fathers’ wealth and social standing. They were painted red to symbolize good luck and prosperity.
This tall cabinet was handcrafted from the core of an elm wood tree with Ming dynasty simplicity: the simple elegance of its straight lines and minimal decorations. The cabinet’s structure, which is consistent with traditional, handcrafted Chinese furniture, confirms its authenticity: the two large, easily removable doors supported by wooden hinges; and the tenon and mortise joinery requiring no glue nails or other mechanical joining device. The doors feature a large, round bronze face-plate with decorative floral etching around its perimeter and etched bronze pulls that open to reveal great storage possibilities.
This solid piece, which has been well-maintained in its beautifully-aged, original lacquer finish, would make a stunning statement a large reception or living area or serve as a functional bar.
