Born in 1598, tromp served as a lieutenant admiral and played a crucial role during the eighty years’ war and the first anglo-dutch war. He is remembered for his naval victories against the spanish and english fleets, and for raising a broom to the mast of his ship as a symbol that he had swept the seas of enemies. In this portrait, tromp stands confidently in richly detailed military dress with a feathered hat and an ornately patterned sash. He holds a command baton and looks ahead with resolute determination. The background features lightly sketched figures preparing cannons, reinforcing his role in active naval command. The hand-colored detailing emphasizes his authority and the vibrancy of dutch maritime power during the seventeenth century. The lithograph was drawn by w f hoevenaar and printed by p w van de weijer in utrecht. It combines documentary precision with a dramatic presentation, capturing the spirit of a naval hero whose name remains etched in dutch history.
