A rare and visually commanding set of three (3) 19th-century Roman Neoclassical engravings by G. Tognoli, each rendered after iconic sculptures by Italian master Antonio Canova (1757–1822). Known for his idealized classical forms, Canova’s work is celebrated here through highly detailed academic engravings that capture the dynamism, anatomy, and theatrical elegance of his sculpture.
Each engraving is matted in sage green and presented in a decorative giltwood frame, offering a cohesive and timeless display. Ideal for a classically inspired interior, library, or gallery wall.
INCLUDES:
"Theseus Defeating the Centaur" – Depicts the climactic moment of Theseus overpowering the centaur Eurytus. Commissioned in 1804 by the Italian Republic for Napoleon Bonaparte.
"Hercules and Lichas" – A dramatic rear view of Hercules preparing to hurl Lichas into the sea, exemplifying Canova's anatomical mastery.
"Aiace" (Ajax) – Rear view of the mythic Greek hero Ajax, helmeted and contemplative, leaning on his sword.
