A rare and historically significant hand-carved wood coat of arms of Pope Pius VII, dating to shortly after 1800. This ecclesiastical crest features the papal tiara (triregnum) and crossed keys symbolizing the papacy, surmounting a shield divided in two.
The left half of the shield displays the Latin word PAX beneath a patriarchal cross — a powerful emblem of peace and ecclesiastical authority. The right side bears heraldic floral and banded details attributed to the Chiaramonti family arms, to which Pope Pius VII belonged.
Original traces of gilding remain, giving the piece a rich, aged patina. Its devotional, sculptural quality suggests it may have adorned a chapel wall, ecclesiastical cabinet, or a ceremonial object. A compelling artifact from the early 19th century, reflecting the rich artistic and spiritual traditions of the Roman Catholic Church.
Provenance Note:
Attributed to the pontificate of Pope Pius VII (1800–1823), a pivotal figure in Church history known for restoring papal authority post-Napoleon and for signing the Concordat of 1801 with Napoleon Bonaparte.
