The scene captures the bustling port along the Pearl River, with large foreign merchant buildings (known as “factories” or “hongs”) lining the quay, each marked by tall flagpoles bearing the national flags of European trading nations—most prominently the flags of Denmark, Great Britain, and France. In the foreground, a variety of Chinese sampans and junks float across the river, many with distinctive covered cabins, while a large building complex rises across the embankment. These Western-style buildings housed trade offices, storage spaces, and residences for representatives of European East India companies and private traders. The symmetrical, classical architecture reflects colonial influences while also highlighting the significant foreign presence in Canton during the Qing Dynasty. Drawn by Pierre Sonnerat (1745–1814), a French naturalist and explorer, and engraved by Jean-Baptiste-Marie Poisson (1747–1820), the print was issued in the 1806 edition of *Voyage aux Indes Orientales et à la Chine*. This travel account offered one of the earliest illustrated French perspectives on Chinese coastal trade and cross-cultural exchange. The engraving is historically important as it documents the limited zone in which foreigners were allowed to trade under the Canton System prior to the First Opium War (1839–1842). It offers a snapshot of a pivotal moment in global maritime commerce and Sino-European relations, and is highly collectible for those interested in early China trade, port city history, or architectural engraving. Condition report: Very good condition. Center fold as issued. Light age-toning and scattered foxing in the margins. Plate impression strong and clear, with well-preserved detail. Framing tips: Display in a wide horizontal frame with a light neutral mat to emphasize the linear architecture and riverscape. A black or dark wood frame will add definition without overpowering the fine lines. Technique: Engraving Maker: J.-B.-M. Poisson after Pierre Sonnerat, Paris, 1806 See less
