A Japanese suzuribako tansu (portable calligraphy box) from the late Meiji Era (c. 1900). This suzuribako has two drawers and a lidded top section, made of solid paulownia wood, with hand forged iron hardware. The dimensions of the box are 12 1/2" wide by 8 1/2" deep by 9 1/4" high.
Suzuribako were used as portable accounting and calligraphy chests, housing an ink stone, brushes, utensils, and paper in the lidded top section. Inks, currency, and other valuable items for trade were housed in the side-opening drawers.
All drawers open smoothly and the lidded top opens/closes with ease. The chest is in fine antique condition with a beautiful rich patina.
