Description of the item:
oil on cardboard depicting a rural landscape, houses with a farmyard, a woman, and a pond with ducks, signed otto dill in the lower right corner. The painting is textured and clearly shows how the artist was greatly influenced in his work by the impressionist movement, which originated and developed long before his work. All the works auctioned have the same type of brushwork and style. Otto dill (1884-1957) was an important german painter who was part of the munich secession and boasts numerous auction results.
useful information for evaluating the item:
our research shows that the four highest auction results achieved by otto dill range from over €22,000 to €40,904 (over €50,000 including fees). We have also found numerous paintings, very similar to ours in style, color palette, and subject matter, although most are larger than ours, sold at auction for very high prices, including an oil on canvas sold for €12,806 by lempertz in cologne, germany, at the auction "moderne kunst - gemalde - plastik - aquarelle - handzeichnungen - graphik -illustrierte bucher - mappenwerke" on 10/06/1995, lot no. 280, entitled "landschaft in der pfalz". Another sold for €15,000 by ketterer kunst gmbh in munich, germany, at the "moderne kunst" auction on june 12, 2010, lot number 18, entitled "parkweg mit reitern (1940)". Another was sold for €12,500 by lempertz in cologne, germany, at the "moderne kunst" auction on may 30, 2014, lot number 367, entitled "obstplantagengarten (1940)". Finally, one sold for €12,271 by dorling in hamburg, germany, at the "alte neuere meister" auction on december 3, 1999, lot no. 806, entitled "mandelblüte."
(by entering the details of the items we have indicated into google, especially the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language we have used, the date, the lot number, and the auction house or name of the sales website, you will, in most cases, be able to find and view the items mentioned).
final considerations on the item:
we have no documents or expertise to confirm the authenticity of the work, although i can safely say that the painting is 100% original, in my opinion, of course. The cardboard backing clearly dates back to the early decades of the 1900s, the signature is identical to that found on various paintings that have been auctioned, and the photos taken under a wood's lamp show that the signature is contemporary with the painting, not added later (otherwise it would be fluorescent), and completely under the patina. We also cleaned the painting ourselves, and the pigment's reaction to the solvents is consistent with a painting that is about 100 years old, with colors that have hardened over time and are quite resistant to solvents.
