Item description:
delightful basket, candy holder in metal plated in silver on the outside and gold on the inside, with handle and band at the top of the basket opening, entirely perforated with stylized flowers. Made by the german manufacturer württembergische metallwarenfabrik (wmf), probably based on a design by the manufacturer's designer and artistic director, albert mayer. Dating back to the early decades of the 20th century, made in germany in full art deco style.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from our internet research, we found the same basket sold for €278 at a german auction, which was not particularly important, but made of simple metal, neither silver-plated nor gold-plated, and of lesser value than ours, which is silver-plated on the outside and gold-plated on the inside. We then found a plate from the same manufacturer on the internet offered at over €430, a sugar bowl offered at €470, and a silver-plated metal box offered at €1,290. Finally, we found a jug estimated at €1,800-2,000 from cambi in genoa, at the "20th century decorative arts and design" auction on february 27, 2012, lot number 21 entitled "w.m.f. - germania caraffa," described by the expert as "silver-plated metal with flowers in relief and a mermaid-shaped handle. Manufacturer's mark under the base, 1900-1906, height 37 cm. See art nouveau domestic metalwork, antique collector club, p. 138, fig. No. 138." this is to give a general idea of the value of pieces from this manufacturer. Finally, we found two auction results from albert mayer, to whom we attribute the authorship of this object, a pair of candlesticks sold for €800 excluding auction fees of 25-30% and a vase valued at €750.
(by entering the details of the items we have provided into google, especially the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language we have used, the date, the lot number, and the auction house or name of the sales website, you will, in most cases, be able to find and view the items mentioned).
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
the württembergische metallwarenfabrik (wmf) is a very important german manufacturer founded in 1853 by daniel straub. The most important representative of wmf is the artist and designer albert mayer, artistic director of the manufacturer. Its production consists of handcrafted metal objects, often plated in silver or gold. This manufacturer did not always mark its products, and in the early decades of the 20th century, it produced many designs of the highest quality. In the last photo, we have added further historical information about the manufacturer for those who wish to learn more.
