The Pantheon, Rome. An icon of world architecture, the Pantheon’s original construction began in 27 BCE. The name derives from the Greek Pantheon, meaning “devoted to all gods.” The inscription on the portico façade reads: “Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, made this building when consul for the third time,” and was added during Emperor Hadrian’s reconstruction of the temple. This photograph was made at dawn in 2012 using a 4” × 5” view camera (Ebony RSW45) on film. Employing both tilt and shift mechanisms, the tilt was key - allowing precise focus on the marvellous inscription across the façade. You have to rise early to experience this magnificent structure without the usual crowds, but it’s absolutely worth it.
