“Sun of Africa,” Cécile Genon Sorel, Contemporary Art, 2007 – France
Magnificent large-format oil on canvas, titled Sun of Africa, signed and dated 2007 by the French painter Cécile Genon Sorel. This artist's work presents very distinctive features: it is a geometric abstract art, influenced by constructivism.
In general, abstract art is a style of artistic expression characterized by representing concepts abstracted from reality or independent of what is recognizable by the senses, through freedom, irrationality, and diversity of shapes, lines, and colors. In other words, it is a subjective art that does not accurately or figuratively represent the visual reality perceived by humans. It allows for diverse interpretations or points of view depending on the viewer because it does not seek to achieve perfection of stroke or believable compositions. It is considered an art that reaches another dimension of morality and spirituality because it expresses emotions and sensations separated from logic and objectivity.
Geometric abstraction is one of the currents of abstract art, which emerged around the 1920s and is based on the use of simple geometric shapes, combined in subjective compositions.
In this painting, we find defined geometric shapes: rectangular blocks with circles inside. A stepped structure stands out against a dark, intense background. In its center, two large reddish spheres appear that could evoke two suns. Color is fundamental; the choice of warm colors aims to convey sensations, guided, in this case, by the title of the work. This is an abstract work in terms of form, but somehow maintaining the figuration in its title.
