Giuseppe Penuti, Portrait of a Man with a Pointer, 1868, oil on canvas, depicting a gentleman in elegant, dark clothing adorned with jewelry, brooches, and watches. The man is depicted sitting in a garden while stroking the head of a hunting dog, a pointer, resting on his knee.
The painting, relined, comes from a private collection in Milan and is presented unframed. It is in good condition, except for a small tear in the canvas at the bottom left. It is signed in italics G.e Penuti 1868 in red at the bottom right. The work is rendered with extraordinary attention to detail, lending the portrait a high pictorial quality. Every element is depicted with meticulous precision, from the jewelry to the facial expression, but above all, the presence of the dog in the foreground, tenderly caressed by its owner, underscores the emotional intensity and bond between the two.
Giuseppe Penuti (1810-1877) was an Italian painter of the Neoclassical period, belonging to the Lombard school. He worked in Milan and was known for his portraits, although he also painted historical works, vedute, and genre subjects. During his final decade, he also created several animal studies. He studied in his hometown of Milan, at the Brera Academy under Luigi Sabatelli. He presented his first works in 1833 in Milan and exhibited there until 1876.
Giuseppe Penuti's style is characterized by a neoclassical form, with a focus on portraits and historical works. His training at the Brera Academy allowed him to develop his artistic skills and create high-quality works. His works can be admired in many public and private collections, including the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan and the Pinacoteca in Vicenza. This piece has an attribution mark,
