Fascinating vintage sculpture depicting Mercury, the messenger of the gods, crafted from gilded metal with a matte patina finish and mounted on a solid marble base. The slender and dynamic figure echoes the classical iconography of the god with his arm raised, a symbol of movement and lightness.
Mercury, known as Hermes in Greek mythology, is the messenger of the gods, son of Zeus and the nymph Maia. He is the god of commerce, travelers, thieves, and eloquence. He is often depicted wearing winged sandals, a caduceus (a staff entwined with two snakes), and a winged hat. He is renowned for his cunning, speed, and role as a psychopomp, guiding souls into the afterlife.
In excellent overall condition with normal signs of aging.
Completely crafted and finished by hand in Italy in the 1960s.
