There isn’t one area that’s not decorated on this beautifully crafted piece of wall hanging furniture, save for the top and the back. The 38 inch long, large size and dark wood tone make it a striking creation, while the originality and craftsmanship showcases the intricate detail of the carving. Perfect for those who appreciate traditional and unique sculptures and carvings, this item is a beautiful addition to any folk art or antique collection. Date and place of creation unknown, it’s very similar to some Flemish and also Black Forest work, and possibly Arts and Crafts, discovered recently in desert southwest United States.

That it is unsigned and not dated makes this feel so personal and endearing, while it’s a shame to not give credit to the creator, it’s the “unmarked” marking that tells us everyone knew who made this at the time. This would have been father’s work, or grandfather’s, or a combined generational project.


The overall shelf is in remarkably good condition. There are two scrapes along the bottom edge about 1 inch long each, and two mounting holes on the back. It is not a freestanding shelf, the corbels hang lower than the bottom, it is designed for a wall mount. It’s almost camouflaged in the pictures, but there is a 1 inch wide lower railing running the length of the 2 inch deep lower shelf. The top shelf is flat with no carving, and 6 inches deep.
