The well-dressed people strolling and children playing in the meadows suggest a sunday afternoon. The composition of this landscape with late 19th-century figures is well-balanced. In the background, the buildings of a village can be glimpsed at the foot of the mountains. The painting is signed lower left in italics s. Poma and is in good condition. It is housed in a modern gilded frame measuring 31 x 44 cm and 5 cm deep.

silvio poma (trescore balneario 1840 – turate 1932) was known as a landscape painter with a repertoire of lake views, often traveling to lake como and the small village of lierna to paint. His intimate works, with their realistic approach, also show the influence of his contemporary filippo carcano. The period from 1883 onwards saw an increase in activity, with the systematic presentation of works in national exhibitions and lasting success on the art market.

he volunteered in the second war of independence and subsequently entered the military, but in 1866 he was discharged from the army after contracting malaria. Upon his return to milan, he frequented the studios of giovan battista lelli and gerolamo induno, both soldier-painters with whom he had come into contact during the 1859 military campaign. He made his debut at the brera fine arts exhibition in 1869, but the first official recognition did not arrive until the middle of the following decade: in 1876, he won the mylius prize from the brera academy of fine arts with a canvas of a historical subject set in a large natural setting in a romantic style, entitled macbeth encounters the witches in the woods of dunscinane who foretell his throne; in 1877, one of his landscapes was purchased at the national exhibition in naples by victor emmanuel ii. He was buried in the cimitero maggiore in milan, where his remains were later placed in a small cell.
