Raymond Picque was a French artist, well respected in his own right, and significant in the post-war regional art movement in northern France. Together with Arthur Van Hecke, Jean Bertaux and Jean Castanier, he was a co-founder of the influential Groupe de Gravelines in 1961.
Picque took a very active in the Groupe de Gravelines, which focused on printmaking and painting. The Group’s aim was to pay tribute to the longline of esteemed artists who were drawn to the region by organising biennial exhibitions. Raymond Picque was guest of honour at the Museum’s third biennial in 1977.
These immense success of these exhibitions gave the Municipality the idea of creating a new permanent cultural institution. This idea led directly to the establishment of the Gravelines Museum of Design, the only French museum dedicated exclusively to the original print. This museum has its permanent location in the former gunpowder store of the historic Chateau Arsenal. This now houses a unique collection of some 10,000 prints and artists’ books.
In 2005 there was an exhibition at the Museum to honour the original founders/ This put together various interviews and recollections of the founders of the Gravelines Group, as part of a civic event entitled “Ambassador of Memory and History”.
Picque is also credited in promoting regional artistic infrastructure more generally. His efforts helped to cement a creative hub in Northern France during the 1960s-1980s, especially in printmaking, etching and graphic arts. His contribution to cultural institution -building in post-war France was substantial.
As an artist, Picque’s style was intense, direct and very expressionist. He lived at Grande Fort Phillippe, and focused on painting the people in his life, inspired by the local shipbuilding workshops and the sailors in the port. He captured what he saw with humour and humanity, making sketches in little notebooks, then creating paintings in his studio. He was constantly inspired by the stunning coast line and landscape of the region.
This striking original oil on canvas painting by renowned French artist Raymond Picque (1926–1984) captures the atmospheric beauty of The Channel of Gravelines, Grand Fort-Philippe. Executed in Picque’s expressive, textural style, the piece evokes a windswept, industrial coastal scene where working boats glide across pale waters under a moody, overcast sky. Bold brushstrokes in slate grey, ochre, and midnight blue create depth and movement, drawing the viewer into the rugged charm of this northern French seaport.
Signed by the artist in the lower right corner, this painting exemplifies Picque’s post-impressionist approach and deep connection to maritime landscapes. A fine example of mid-20th century French coastal art, this work would appeal to collectors of marine painting, expressionist oil art, and regional French scenes. This piece has an attribution mark,
