From the inside dust jacket:
Miyake clothes are Japanese in origin, Western in spirit and, finally, universal. - Time magazine
The publication of Issey Miyake: Photographs by Irving Penn is a singular event in contemporary fashion, photography, and fine bookmaking. It unites the formidable talents of Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake and American photographer Irving Penn. The first volume released in the United States about Miyake's work, it is also the first time that Penn has accepted a commission to create a book-length suite of photographs on the work of a fellow artist.
Issey Miyake spearheaded the Japanese design revolution of the 1970's. He personifies the creative dynamism of modern Japan. Miyake was born in 1938, and studied graphic design at Tokyo's Tama Art University in the early 1960's. While still a student he decided to become a fashion designer, at a time when neither the profession nor even the word existed in Japan. As an apprentice in Paris in the mid 1960's, Miyake realized that "what was supposed to be a disadvantage--my lack of Western heritage--could really be an advantage. It freed me. I had nowhere else to go but forward." After a brief stay in New York, he returned to Tokyo in 1970 to found Miyake Design Studio.
Miyake has been at the cutting edge of fashion design ever since. Drawing from the wellsprings of Japanese cultural tradition, his work combines refined craftsmanship with ceaseless experimentation of fabric and form. The resulting designs seem ancient, contemporary and futurist all at once. He is, finally, a sculptor whose medium is cloth. Yvonne Deslandres, the late curator of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, referred to Miyake as "the greatest creator of clothing of our time."
