Thin sheets of gold leaf have been pressed onto a wooden board, then embellished with precious and semi precious stones. The raised and embellished surfaces create a 3 dimensional effect—simply breathtaking!
Tanjore painting originated in the THANJAVUR region of Tamil Nadu, India, dating back to the 16th century, during the CHOLA Dynasty. These paintings are known for their vibrant and rich colors, their use of gold leaf, and intricate gesso work. These beautiful works of art are created layer-by-layer, giving the painting their three-dimensional look. The scenes usually depict Hindu deities, saints, and scenes from Hindu mythology.
The pictures I have taken were done on a cloudy day, but even so, the painting is still a joy to behold , but when the sun sneaked out from behind the clouds, this painting came to life and was positively glowing!
