An important oil on canvas from the Flemish school, attributed to Pieter Van Hanselaere (Ghent, 1786 – 1862), a renowned Belgian neoclassical painter who worked between Ghent, Rome, and Naples in the first half of the 19th century.
The subject, titled Le brigand blessé (The Blessed Brigand), depicts a dramatic scene of popular life: a wounded brigand, attended by his wife and son, immersed in a dark, theatrical setting, with meticulous details of clothing, weapons, and fabrics.
This work is closely related to the painting of the same name, signed and dated "P. VHanselaere Ft Naples 1827," sold at auction at Christie's in 2006 for approximately €9,600 (the lot has been cited in art literature and at exhibitions such as Brussels, Musée d'Ixelles, and Paris, Pavillon des Arts).
No visible signature has been identified in this version, which is why the work is considered attributable to the artist.

Van Hanselaere was among the most highly regarded Belgian painters of Neoclassicism, known for his historical and genre scenes. The theme of brigandage, explored during his stay in Naples, was particularly popular in 19th-century Romantic art and today remains a subject of great fascination for collectors and lovers of historical painting.
