This 9x12 antique Aubusson rug is both a rare and unusual, yet exceptional new addition to Rug & Kilim’s European rug collection—an early-19th-century treasure of the French Neoclassical flatweave style, handwoven in wool and believed to originate from France circa 1810-1820.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft may appreciate this transitional rug among the works of a special workshop among early reimaginings of the earlier Aubusson design sensibility, as well as a uniquely pastoral, French Country piece found in this weaving tradition. The central field features systematic rows of elaborate rosette medallions in coral, burgundy, and soft blue tones against an unusual golden-olive ground—a color combination that sets this piece apart from typical Aubusson productions. Each rosette medallion displays intricate internal detailing with concentrically arranged petals and geometric centers that reveal the workshop's mastery of complex floral abstraction. The golden-olive field provides a sophisticated neutral foundation that allows the floral elements to register clearly while creating unusual warmth.
The elaborate sage green border reveals exceptional design hierarchy through scrolling vine work, stylized palmettes, and corner rosettes that demonstrate encyclopedic knowledge of classical French decorative vocabulary. The multiple guard borders create a sophisticated transitional framework between the central design and surrounding space. This unique Aubusson rug functions as a museum-quality centerpiece celebrating exceptional French textile artistry through its distinctive color palette and versatile proportions. The golden-olive and sage green tonalities complement both traditional and contemporary furnishings, while the classical floral sophistication adds cultural gravitas perfect for formal libraries, dining rooms, or reception areas requiring authentic French decorative distinction and artistic excellence.
