Part of Patricia P. Abreu’s Beneath the Surface series, Escape 3 continues the artist’s exploration of emotion through abstract underwater photography. In this body of work, Abreu moves beyond literal portraiture—embracing water’s ability to distort, soften, and obscure the human form. Faces vanish, details dissolve, and what remains is a suggestion of feeling: longing, joy, solitude, memory.

The series began with photographs of the artist’s son at play underwater. Capturing his movement, bubbles, and light became a gateway not just to visual experimentation, but to something more intimate—images that felt like half-remembered memories, fading and shifting with time.

In Escape 3, the subject drifts into stillness, no longer seeking fun but retreat. There’s a quiet tension in the composition, a moment held between immersion and release. The figure, anonymous and adrift, becomes a vessel for the viewer’s own emotional reading.
