Jill Moser "9.6" gouache & casein original 30x22.5 inch painting on archival watercolor paper.
As a young adult, Jill Moser was deeply influenced by watching avant-garde films at Anthology Film Archives in New York, encountering filmmakers like Michael Snow, Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, and Jonas Mekas. These experiences immersed her in a cinema that abandoned traditional storytelling in favor of poetic, abstract, and non-narrative forms, shaping her approach to painting by fostering a reflective, language-independent way of seeing. Moser credits this exposure with introducing her to the expressive potential of visual signs. Before pursuing an MFA in art, Moser also studied semiotics at Brown in the 1970s, a period when this field—concerned with the complexities of language, meaning, and interpretation—was gaining traction in American academia. This background deeply informed her early artistic work and continues to influence her ongoing exploration of language and visual meaning in art.
During a 2018 interview and studio visit by Fintan Boyle and Jennie Nichols, Moser conveyed that as a painter “you are documenting something as you are expressing it,” you are “recording as you are describing.” In Moser's words, “Improvisation plays an important role in my work, but my decisions are not random. As a painting or drawing develops it gradually reveals its own logic and stance. It suggests certain possibilities that I then work with. But it is really through the teasing of form and gesture, each insisting on the other, that the image emerges.”
Moser has exhibited extensively around the world, including at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Art institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, and many others.
