The scene … Read more Antique oil on canvas painting depicting "Diana's Rest" with gilt and carved wood frame coeval with the same. The scene depicts the goddess of the hunt who, having stowed away her bow and quiver, is ready to enjoy the pleasures of a relaxing bath in the company of her nymph. The two maidens stand at the edge of a grove by the banks of a stream. They are hidden by tall, lush shrubs, and the goddess sits naked on a precious blue silk fabric. The softness of the color scheme and the softness of the skin of the two young women show the importance of the influence of Italian art on the painter's training. In reality, the mythological inspiration served only to justify an image that would otherwise have appeared as too sensual. The subject is secondary to the true purpose of the painting here is to celebrate the allure of the female nude, in a mixture of glamour and eroticism. Condition: Good Condition.
