Four antique biedermeier chairs
saxony
beech tree
first half 19th cent.
dimensions: h x w x d: 87 x 46 x 45 cm - seat height: 47 cm
:
solid beech chairs standing on sabre-shaped legs with oak leaf carving on the back board and fan-shaped corner decorations under the cross brace.
originally, the beech wood was probably stained the colour of walnut, as was customary in the region. The former dark colour has been preserved in the indentations of the carvings in the backrest.
an almost identical chair with only slight differences in the backrest design can be found under inventory number 56-1364 in the german damask and terry museum in großschönau. It can be assumed that this chair was made in saxony, possibly in the town of rabenau, 15 kilometres from dresden, where the chairmaking trade had been successfully established since the early 17th century. In 1804, d.j. Merkel-engelhardt reported in his "erdbeschreibung von kursachsen" that "carved and woven chair frames of all kinds were made in rabenau according to the latest models, mostly for dresden bag makers and upholsterers, but often also for other regions". In 1837, 26 chairmakers and 21 journeymen lived in the small town.
a set of chairs owned by the dresden court clockmaker johann christian friedrich gutkaes, who is depicted in a lithograph in fritz löffler - das alte dresden - geschichte seiner bauten 16. Aufl. Fig. 434, corresponds in form and design to the chairs offered here.
another very similar chair is illustrated in the accompanying catalogue of the grassi museum leipzig on the occasion of the exhibition on friedrich gottlob hoffmann on p. 74 and dated around 1800.
condition:
refurbished and suitable for everyday use. Newly upholstered and newly covered.
there are traces of old upholstery fastenings on the rear cleats as well as traces of old woodworm infestation in the frame and lower leg area.
