This exceptional vintage kokeshi doll was created by renowned Japanese artist Watanabe Masao (1917–2007), a pioneer in the world of sōsaku kokeshi (creative kokeshi). His work is internationally celebrated for its elegant simplicity and poetic expression of the concept of mushin (無心) – a state of openness, innocence, or inner calm.
Dimensions: height 27.5 cm, diameter 7 cm
Stamped with Watanabe’s red seal (hanko) on the base.
This doll is an expressive and rare variation of Watanabe’s classic designs. The large, rounded head contrasts beautifully with the slender, tapering body.
The facial features are rendered with just a few delicate brushstrokes, characteristic of his minimalist style.
The body is crafted from richly textured wood with a pronounced grain, and adorned with a hand-painted white blossom motif flowing across the kimono.
In very good vintage condition, with only minor signs of age and a beautifully developed natural patina. This piece has an attribution mark,
