max beckmann was born on february 12, 1884, in leipzig. From 1900, he studied at the grand ducal art school in weimar. Beckmann's artistic beginnings were guided by the plein-air painting taught there. In 1903, he went to paris and attended the private académie colarossi. In paris, he was particularly impressed by the paintings of paul cézanne. In 1904, max beckmann moved to berlin, where he was influenced by german impressionism, represented by max liebermann, lovis corinth, and max slevogt. In 1906, he exhibited his works at the berlin secession exhibition in weimar. He received the honorary prize of the german artists' association, which included a scholarship for a stay at the villa romana in florence. In 1914, max beckmann co-founded the free secession in berlin.
during world war i, beckmann enlisted as a medic, but the horrific war experiences led to a mental breakdown, and he was released from military service.
around 1916, max beckmann's painting style shifted from impressionism to expressionism. Beckmann's densely packed, dynamic figure compositions, which he exaggerates with sharp edges and sharpness, become characteristic of his work. The content becomes increasingly complex and esoteric, almost incomprehensible without knowledge of the sources he drew on (kabbalah, gnosis).
his artistic breakthrough came in the 1920s, and numerous exhibitions in berlin, dresden, paris, and new york made beckmann's work known. Publisher reinhard piper published books illustrated by max beckmann, as well as the major beckmann monograph published in 1924.
in 1925, beckmann taught a master class at the städelschule in frankfurt am main, and in 1929 he became a professor. In 1928, a major retrospective exhibition, curated by gustav f. Hartlaub, took place at the kunsthalle mannheim. Beckmann received the reich honorary prize of german art, and the city of düsseldorf awarded him the gold medal.
max beckmann's career was abruptly cut short by the nazi seizure of power. As early as 1933, beckmann was dismissed from the städelschule, the beckmann hall in the kronprinzenpalais of the nationalgalerie was cleared out, and a planned exhibition in erfurt was canceled. Twelve of his paintings were shown in the 1937 exhibition "degenerate art" in munich. One day after the opening of this exhibition, beckmann emigrated to amsterdam.
after 1945, max beckmann did not return to germany; he declined offers from the academy in munich, the berlin university of the arts, and the werkkunstschule in darmstadt. In 1947, he accepted a professorship at the washington university art school in st. Louis. In 1949, he taught at the art school of the brooklyn museum.
max beckmann died of heart failure in new york on december 27, 1950.
