The hand-knotted oriental Zanjan rug was made in Middle East during the 1960s. Traditionally flatwoven and dyed in shades of rustic red, black, and ivory, Zanjan or Zanjan Hamadan rugs are a type of traditional Middle Eastern rug originating from the city of Zanjan, located in northwest Middle East, near the Hamadan region. The city is an important stop on the Middle Eastian Silk Road and is also a center for the production of high-quality Middle Eastern rugs. All are entirely handmade by nomadic tribes. Zanjan rugs often feature geometric patterns, with motifs such as rhombuses, polygons, and stylized floral motifs. Often, they feature a central medallion extending from top to bottom. Typical colors include reds, navy blues, blues, and beiges. Strong, saturated hues are often used. These rugs are typically made of high-quality wool with a cotton warp. The wool can be quite thick, making the rug durable and long-lasting. The knot used to weave these rugs is most often a symmetrical Turkish knot, which gives them a sturdy feel. The Zanjan style is closely related to other rugs from the Hamadan region, but Zanjan rugs typically have a more refined and structured appearance compared to the more casual Hamadan designs. Zanjan Hamadan rugs are prized for their durability, handcrafted craftsmanship, and authenticity, which embodies a piece of Middle Eastern tradition.
The rug is in original vintage condition. It has signs of wear due to age, fabric loss, abrasions and damage to the fleece. The rug will be professionally cleaned.
