additional information:
this small table is part of a prestigious dining room set consisting of a sideboard, a china cabinet, and a small table, which dates from the early creative period of prof. Otto prutscher, one of the most versatile and consistent designers of the vienna art nouveau movement. The design was created in 1906, when prutscher had already developed his own distinctive style, influenced by the wiener werkstätte and his teachers josef hoffmann and franz matsch. It was crafted by the johann seidl cabinetmakers (diehlgasse 27) in vienna, renowned for their technically sophisticated furniture in the spirit of the secession.
in terms of design, this piece of art furniture combines the architectural austerity and clear proportions often found in prutscher's early works with fine craftsmanship and decorative sophistication. The design language underlines prutscher's claim that furniture should be understood as fully-fledged works of art in the overall context of the interior.
otto prutscher (1880–1949), son of a master carpenter, trained at the vienna school of applied arts between 1897 and 1901 and was already internationally recognized at the age of 26. In 1902, he received the silver medal at the exhibition in turin, followed by a gold medal at the paris world exhibition in 1925. As a long-standing professor at the vienna school of arts and crafts (1909–1938) and a leading designer at thonet's design office (from 1911), he influenced generations of designers. His designs are always committed to the principle of the "gesamtkunstwerk" (total work of art): architecture, interior design, furniture, and decorative art form a creative unity.
this piece of furniture is one of the few surviving examples from this early creative phase of prutscher's career, which was characterized by reformist ideas. It is exemplary of the high level of design and craftsmanship in viennese interior design around 1900. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
