Bernardo Strozzi, also known as “Il Cappuccino” and “il Prete Genovese”, was an Italian Baroque painter and engraver. He was born in Genoa and initially he was mainly active in Genoa, but in the latter part of his career he worked in Venice. At the age of 17, Strozzi joined a Capuchin monastery, and that is where he came to be called by the nickname "il Cappuccino" ("the Capuchin"). His works include a wide range of subjects including history, allegorical, genre and portrait paintings as well as still lifes. Strozzi was a sought-after portrait painter who portrayed the leading aristocratic, clerical and artistic figures of his time. The bust portrait of a young man with a fine white collar and elegant beard is slightly to the right against an indeterminate background. In her expert report, Anna Orlando offers seven good comparative examples which prove that the present work can be easily integrated into the oeuvre of Bernardo Strozzi (Genoa, Italy, 1581 – Venice, Italy, 1644).
