A bold and atmospheric abstract by contemporary artist Louis Shields, "Shadow Fires" blends structure and spontaneity in a richly layered composition. Part of his Singed Millennium Series (2017), this large-scale mixed-media painting is an elaborate interplay of soft neutrals and vivid bursts of color, ivory, ash gray, and charcoal, disrupted by glowing fields of orange, rust, and gold.
Built up through textural applications of acrylic, plaster, and graphite, the surface reads like a weathered map or an ancient blueprint. Its fractured geometry evokes both memory and heat. The composition is architectural and raw, yet softened by an organic, painterly hand.
