A Japanese two-fold screen in Rimpa School style with coloured inks and gouache on squared paper, depicting a Manchurian Crane standing amidst shobu (irises) by a stream that flows beneath a flowering prunus tree, the image within a later brocaded silk border within a black painted support.
Because of the eccentric size and shape of the piece it is most probably a section of an 18th century screen that has suffered damage or loss from perhaps fire, or water, even severe insect infestation, has had the unattractive parts cut away and the remaining area re-mounted in the late 19th or early 20th Century to make it a more enticing commercial proposition. Who the artist was cannot be said as, if it were signed at all, that portion has been lost! The Rimpa School was effectively founded in the 17th Century by Koetsu, revived in the early 18th Century by the Ogata brothers, Kenzan and Korin, but the style continued for a long time thereafter. The most prominent of the later exponents was Hoitsu in the first half of the 19th Century.

There are passages within it that appear to have been either repaired or restored, and there is much wear and tear with areas that have suffered abrasions and tears but this remains an attractive item. less
