Three initials and the date are cut out of the fancy metal work under the lock.(see the photos) The wood is in surprisingly good solid shape for being 334 years old but some areas of the leather are in poor condition or missing. The lock is broken but it looks like that was done in the 1700's judging from the patina on the break. The hinges and massive iron handles all work fine with no rust and heavy patina. This chest is large and has a great presence about it. It should be in a museum but in the right place this one of a kind chest would make a great conversation piece. It needs to be somewhere it is appreciated and preserved. This is your chance to own an unusual piece of Americana. I can NOT offer free shipping on this but it is in northern Illinois so let's talk.
