This 1927 dining table, designed by Paul Bromberg for Pander, shows the expressive craftsmanship typical of the Amsterdam- and The Hague School. It’s a rare and carefully considered work, published in Monique Teunissen’s book on Bromberg (page 14) and pictured courtesy of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
Design
The table features a round top with a separate extension leaf (, allowing it to open into an oval configuration. While the structure is made of solid oak, the top and the base are veneered in luxurious coromandel wood – a particularly rare material for this type of furniture. Its dark, swirling grain is both complex and graphic, lending a rich visual rhythm to the entire piece.
The pedestal base flares out gently into sculptural feet, grounded yet dynamic. Designed in The Hague and executed by Pander, this table embodies the architectural language and material sensitivity of the late 1920s Dutch design movement. Subtle chamfers and restrained joinery reflect a focus on form and function without ornamentation. The natural patterns of the coromandel veneer are uninterrupted, thanks to the high level of craftsmanship in the marquetry and restoration.
This is a documented and well-executed example of a cross-over between Amsterdam School and The Haguse School furniture design at its most refined. Elegant in concept, honest in material. The table has a metal plate with the Pander logo on it.
