A beautiful vintage Japanese woodblock reprint after Torii Kiyonaga (1752–1815), one of the most refined ukiyo-e masters of the Edo period. This hand-printed work, published by Uchida Art Co. in Kyoto, depicts an intimate moment in a women’s bathhouse, where several women are seated on wooden planks, drying themselves or preparing for bathing.
The figures are rendered with graceful lines, calm expressions, and traditional attire (or lack thereof), characteristic of Kiyonaga’s mastery in portraying the beauty and leisure of 18th-century Japanese life. The setting includes buckets, red textile accents, and gold-leaf decorative panels above, evoking a refined public bath interior.
The print retains the original Uchida publisher’s label on the reverse, along with a description in English and Japanese.

About the Artist: Torii Kiyonaga (1752–1815)
Torii Kiyonaga was one of the most celebrated masters of ukiyo-e, the genre of Japanese woodblock prints known as “pictures of the floating world.” A leading figure of the Torii school in Edo (now Tokyo), Kiyonaga gained fame for his portrayals of beautiful women (bijin-ga) and leisurely urban life.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Kiyonaga depicted women with more naturalistic proportions and dynamic postures, often placing them in everyday domestic or social settings. His compositions feature elegant lines, refined colors, and a sophisticated sense of spatial arrangement, marking a transition into the mature phase of ukiyo-e art in the late 18th century.
Kiyonaga’s works are housed in major museum collections, including The Met, the British Museum, and the Tokyo National Museum. He remains a key figure in Japanese art history and a favorite among collectors of Edo-period woodblock prints.
