A delicately composed Japanese woodblock print after Suzuki Harunobu (1725–1770), one of the earliest masters of full-color printing in Japan’s Edo period. This graceful bijin-ga scene shows two women in a private bathing and grooming moment — one gently wrings her hair over a water bucket, while the other combs hers at ease.
Printed in the Uchida-style tradition of mid-20th century Kyoto publishers, the piece reflects Harunobu’s poetic linework, feminine elegance, and calm domestic beauty. It is professionally framed under glass in a bold red painted frame and remains in excellent vintage condition.
About the Artist: Suzuki Harunobu (1725–1770)
Suzuki Harunobu (鈴木春信) was one of the most influential early ukiyo-e masters and the pioneer of full-color woodblock printing (nishiki-e) in Japan. Active during the mid-Edo period, he was the first to print consistently in multiple colors using separate woodblocks, revolutionizing Japanese printmaking.
Harunobu is known for:
• His delicate, slender depictions of women and courtesans
• Graceful scenes of daily life, love, beauty, and domestic intimacy
• A soft, poetic aesthetic that blends refined linework and subtle color harmonies
This print reflects Harunobu’s signature style — feminine figures in flowing robes, gently curved lines, and elegant posture. The piece illustrates a post-bath or grooming ritual, as seen in many of his bijin-ga works.
