Delightful pincushion in vitrified hard-paste porcelain, entirely hand-decorated, consisting of a basket with a vintage red velvet cushion, a dog … Read more Delightful pincushion in vitrified hard-paste porcelain, entirely hand-decorated, consisting of a basket with a vintage red velvet cushion, a dog nearby, and flowers in relief on the base. Made in Germany between the late 19th and early 20th century by the Ernst Bohne & Sohne factory in Rudolstadt, it is signed under the base with an underglaze blue anchor and the letters "EBS," the initials of the manufacturer, incised into the ceramic body. The base features a stamp from an auction in which the item was auctioned.

We haven't found any similar pincushions, but a quick internet search shows that Ernst Bohne & Sohne porcelain animal figurines are offered on the best online art and antiques sites, ranging from a minimum of €300-400 for the smallest, simplest, and youngest pieces, up to prices exceeding €1,500-2,000 for the largest, most intricately crafted, and older pieces. In particular, we found a bulldog dating to the 19th century, offered by other sellers for over €2,300, while a more recent German Shepherd, dating to 1930, is asking €1,290.

Ernst Bohne & Sohne is a Thuringian manufacturer founded in 1854, internationally renowned for the quality and beauty of its porcelain creations. It was later acquired in 1945 by Rudolstadt, another renowned German manufacturer. The manufacturer boasts a vast artistic output and numerous auction results. In the last photo, we've included historical information on the manufacturer taken from a French volume, along with some of the many marks used, including our own, specifically the number 13, used in the late 19th century.
