This rare and exceptionally elegant vintage kokeshi was created by the legendary Japanese artist Watanabe Masao (1917–2007), a pioneering figure in the world of sōsaku kokeshi (creative kokeshi). His work is internationally celebrated for its minimalist aesthetic and poetic expression of the concept mushin (無心) – innocence or a pure, unclouded mind.
Dimensions: height 29 cm, diameter 10 cm
This particular doll is a rare variation of his most iconic design. The form is simple and refined: a large, perfectly rounded head rests atop a gently tapering body. The facial features are rendered with just a few delicate brushstrokes. The body is made of beautifully grained wood, adorned with a finely carved kimono motif that flows gracefully across the front.
The base is hand-signed and bears Watanabe’s distinctive red seal (hanko).
In very good condition with minimal signs of age and a lovely natural patina.
A valuable collector’s piece and a rare opportunity to acquire an original work by Watanabe. This piece has an attribution mark,
