Beni Mguild rugs are hand-knotted by Berber women from the Aït M'Guild tribe, who inhabit the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco. These rugs are known for their thick, luxurious piles which are tightly knotted. The Beni Mguild are a semi-nomadic group known as Imazighen, who originally belonged to the Aït Oumalou Sanhaja.
The art of weaving Beni Mguild rugs has been passed down through generations, with mothers teaching their daughters the traditional techniques.
Historically, each family crafted their own rugs for household use, such as floor coverings or blankets. Over time, these rugs gained popularity beyond Morocco and became sought-after pieces in the world of interior design. These rugs typically blend abstract and geometric designs in asymmetrical yet orderly patterns. Common motifs include diamonds, lozenges, zigzags, and herringbone. The designs are based on the weavers' imaginations and often symbolize themes in Berber culture, like life, death, protection, fertility, and more.
The rugs are hand-knotted on traditional looms, a labor-intensive process that can take months to complete. Due to their handmade nature and the weavers' individual expression, no two Beni Mguild rugs are identical. Subtle imperfections are valued, reflecting the artisan's personal touch. Beni Mguild rugs are cherished for their beauty, warmth, and the rich cultural heritage they represent.
