Panel / pyrography, religious theme: st. Francis speaking to the birds, gothic art nouveau, early 20th century
this large pyrographed panel depicts saint francis of assisi, recognizable by his simple robe tied with a cord and by the composition of the image, which places him at the center of a gothic alcove, surrounded by numerous birds that appear to be listening to him.
indeed, one of the characteristics attributed to the saint is his ability to communicate with animals, especially birds.
a border inspired by gothic design but executed in a distinctly art nouveau style surrounds the scene. In the lower part, the latin phrase "ora pro nobis" is inscribed, which translates as "pray for us."
this pyrographed panel stands out for its blend of styles and periods, as well as for the treatment of its design.
by using tinted products, the artist worked with contrasts and depth, not through color, but by varying intensities—sometimes emphasized with outlines, as seen in the border, and at other times through smooth gradients, such as in the folds of saint francis’s robe or in the large birds within the composition.
the panel is discreetly signed "ag" in the lower right corner.
