Pair of Pyrographed Panels – The Seasons: Autumn & Winter – Art Nouveau, France, circa 1900
An elegant Belle Époque diptych, this pair of pyrographed panels delicately embodies the enchanting aesthetic of Art Nouveau.
Created in France around 1900 and signed “H.C.,” these two finely crafted works depict the feminine allegories of the seasons of Autumn and Winter, brought together in a harmonious and poetic composition.
The Winter panel reveals a female figure draped in a fur-trimmed coat, her hands hidden in a muff, surrounded by snowdrops and stylized foliage. The scene is fully in keeping with the Art Nouveau style, with its organic lines and masterful play of balanced asymmetry.
Facing her, the figure of Autumn, dressed in a rustic gown, gently leans on a fence while reading a book, her posture tinged with melancholy. Chestnut burrs and blooming peonies create a setting that is both rich and natural, reflecting the gentle decline of the season. Here too, the refinement of the composition subtly mirrors the winter scene, in a vegetal harmony that connects the two works.
Showcasing rare craftsmanship and a sensitive artistic view of the seasons, these two pyrographed panels are in good overall condition, with some signs of wear that add to their charm and authenticity. The original frames are in fair condition (with visible chips and losses).
