A characterful ceramic figure of a traditional Japanese tanuki, crafted in the 1970s in Shigaraki – a region renowned for its centuries-old pottery tradition and playful tanuki figures.
Dimensions: height 33 cm, width 25 cm, depth 20 cm. In good condition.
This tanuki features the classic attributes from Japanese folklore: a straw hat, a sake flask in one paw, and a promissory note in the other. with its mischievous expression, round belly, and prominent details, the figure symbolizes good fortune, prosperity, and carefree living. The warm glaze, shifting from deep brown to creamy beige, highlights the texture of the fur and accessories beautifully.
A Shigaraki maker’s mark is present on the back of the straw hat, confirming its origin and authenticity.
