Miniature, small plaque in biscuit porcelain, of rare beauty. Entirely hand-painted and signed by the artist "Scherl" (Franz Scherl, 19th-20th century), it comes with a solid walnut wooden frame, completely carved in bas-relief. The plaque depicts "The Madonna of the Chair," a famous oil on panel painting (diameter 71 cm) by Raphael Sanzio, circa 1513-1514, and housed in the Palatine Gallery of Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The plaque is marked on the back with a lily and the wording "Florence" underneath, and dates to the late 19th century, around 1880.
Useful information for appraising the item:
Franz Scherl is a famous German painter, and our research shows that one of his paintings, lot 101, titled "Cléôpatre," was sold by Kohn in Paris at an auction on October 30, 1996, for over €6,000, excluding 25-30% commission. However, consider that the auction took place in 1996, when the old Lira was still in use; the price was converted from Lira to Euros, so €6,000 was equivalent to approximately 12 million Lira, which in 1996 was worth much more than €6,000 today. It is therefore as if the painting had sold for around €15,000 today. Finally, it should be noted that porcelain paintings are always extremely valuable, even unsigned.
Final considerations on the object:
This plaque is of exceptional quality, far superior to the average for similar objects. It is no coincidence that it was created by a true artist, not a craftsman or porcelain decorator, but by a 19th-century painter and signed by him. An important, antique, signed object of rare beauty. This piece has an attribution mark,
