A rare West German Mid-Century Modern Demitasse Coffee Set from either the late 1950s or early 1960s, with a distinctive geometric design that features a prominent gold “88” motif set against a black and white striped background with gold accents. I love the play of black, white and gold in the decoration.
The 15 pc set gilded and hand painted demitasse coffee set for six is very thinly molded. When held to a light, you can see the translucence in the porcelain. The set includes a coffee pot, a sugar with lid, a creamer, and six sets of demitasse coffee cups and saucers. The pot has a lid with a gilded knob and a flange to hold it on the coffee pot top. All pieces, except for two saucers, have gilding along their rims.
All serving pieces have shallow foot edges with glazed base. Each piece has is a transfer mark in green on the base that reads “Z & Co. Tirschenreuth Bavaria”. There is a crown above the words. This is the mark for Keramische Werke Zehendner Z & Co Tirschenreuth Bavaria, which has been used by the company since approximately 1940. Each piece is impressed with “710/0“, which I believe is the model number. Most pieces also has another number in green under the trademark, which I believe is refers to the type of piece it is (saucer, teapot, etc.)

CONDITION
There are no breaks, chips, cracks, or repairs to and of the pieces. The set is in excellent condition, except for the following minor wear:
Teapot – There is moderate wear to the gilding along the mouth rim and in the white spaces around the “88” designs
Sugar bowl – There is moderate wear to the gilding along the rim and to several of the “88” designs. There is significant wear to the gilding on the very top of the finial.
Creamer – There is moderate wear to the gilding along the rim.
Saucer- Light to moderate wear to the gilding along the rims
Teacups – Gilding is mostly intact with a few slightly worn areas along the rim. Two of the cups have a couple of tiny stray spots inside the cup where the gold gilding must have dripped during manufacture, and one small spot where the black glaze dripped. One demitasse cup has a glazed over chip in the black of the rim.
This is a quintessential MCM coffee set to either use or display.
