This sculptural console table is a fine example of the Italian Baroque aesthetic executed in the mid-18th century. The rectilinear top is fitted with a later marble slab of richly variegated rouge griotte, its dramatic veining offering a bold counterpoint to the luminous regilt surface of the frame. It is set within a sipmle cove-molding framed in a dramatic gadrooned edge over a deeply carved apron with a bas-relief central mascaron framed by scrolling volutes and greek-key elements.

The shaped and beautifully sculpted legs, vigorously scrolled with low-relief foliate carving, terminate in volute feet and are joined by a conforming stretcher with central plateau. The bold architectural presence of the base is softened by the rhythmic interplay of convex and concave lines.

The restored gilt surface is brilliant and glowing throughout, retaining a sense of antiquity while showing the warmth and softness of time in its well-retained patina.

Condition: Top is an old replacement with a triangular patch in the front left corner. Regilt to surfaces, which somewhat obscures the frame from deeper observation of repairs. Back right leg repaired (seam across top). Other repairs, replacements and minor surface blemishes. Sturdy, strong and a very fine presentation. Ready to place.
